I’m a diehard Kiss Me, and I have been ever since I randomly clicked on “best kpop songs of 2011.” There was especially one group that caught my eye; U-KISS, performing their song “Neverland.” I remember seeing a bunch of pretty faces dancing a very powerful dance to a very catchy song. One music video led to another, every single variety show and interview they’ve participated in was watched, and suddenly, I was completely won over. There was no way back; I knew I would love these boys forever.
In this post, I’m going to write about Eli, along with my opinions and thoughts about him. For Kevin’s post, click here.
Birthdate: March 13, 1991(21)
Position: Main rapper
When I saw U-KISS for the first time, which was in the “Neverland” performance, the first member I noticed was Eli. He was this handsome pretty face that got about four lines in the entire song, but he was the dancer standing in the center during the chorus. You can say that Eli is the reason I started noticing U-KISS in the first place. I immediately decided that I had to find out who this boy was, and later found at that his name is Kim Eli, a Korean-American singer and main rapper in U-KISS.
Eli is extremely attractive. He was voted the most handsome member in U-KISS by all the other members, including himself (lol). He’s not a drop dead gorgeous sex bomb with a smoking hot body, but he’s extremely handsome and manly. And his nose… he has such a pretty nose. Whenever he’s performing, he just got that look. Makes me fall in love with him every time. Personally, I prefer him with the hairstyle he had during the “Neverland” promotions. So. Hot.
Now this is actually pretty sad, but Eli is the main rapper of U-KISS, which is a role I think it’s completely wrong for him. Granted, I can’t even tell if he’s a bad or a good rapper, because the parts that he gets in U-KISS’ songs can hardly be classified as “raps.” We all remember the ridiculous lines he got in “Manmanhani” and “Bingeul Bingeul.” Made me cringe. I don’t think he has gotten the chance to prove his rapping abilities yet, and therefore, he’s usually criticized for his rapping.
I’m sure you could give him lyrics and tell him to rap, and he would do it confidently (looking damn hot while doing it too), but it’s hard to really tell whether or not he’s a good rapper by listening to U-KISS’ songs.
Eli has a beautiful voice, as proven in “Someday” and “When love stops.” This boy can sing. I completely melted when I first heard him actually singing. I would say vocally, he’s somewhere between Kevin’s and Hoon’s voices. His voice is soft, but he has this deep, almost vibrating sound when he sings. In “When love stops”, he looks so incredibly vulnerable and sincere. Unfortunately, Eli is not a technically amazing vocalist, nor does he have perfect pitch. He doesn’t hit every note, and he’s not one hundred percent confident about his singing in live performances. But this is not his fault. He hasn’t gotten proper vocal training, like Kevin or Hoon, who has trained for years. And let’s be honest, when has he ever gotten the chance to actually prove that he has a voice that’s capable of doing more than
yelling rapping a few ridiculous words every now and then?
I’m sure that if Eli starts getting vocal training and more lines in their songs instead of trying to be a fantastic rapper, he’ll turn out as a great vocalist.
He’s an average dancer. He pulls off every choreography given, but doesn’t noticeably stand out as an amazing dancer (like Yuri or Hyoyeon in SNSD does). He just sort of blends in with the rest of the members, doing exactly the same dance that they do. What does make him stand out, however, is his handsome looks and charisma when performing.
Eli is hilarious. He’s just a natural jokester who loves pulling pranks and make others laugh. Does anyone remember his famous imitation of a pigeon? He has admitted that he was teased for looking like a pigeon, and he doesn’t really want to be recognized as one, but he still does the imitation whenever anyone asks him too. In chef’s kiss, Eli was the one that ran around the room trying to catch the flying chicken. He’s the best cook in U-KISS, and he’s extremely hard-working when cooking.
At first glance, he seems a bit quiet and cocky (granted, he has plenty of reason to be confident about himself, just look at him) but if you watch variety shows with U-KISS, you can’t help but fall for his adorkable personality. Eli is truly a dork, at the same time as being the manliest and coolest in the group.
At the age of 15, he moved alone to China to pursue his studies, majoring in Taekwondo and Kung Fu. Because he lived alone (his family was still in the United States), he had to take care of himself. He ate only ramen. One day he would eat the noodles, and the next day he would drink the soup. I think because of the difficulties he has faced, he’s extremely thankful to his family. He’s very close to them, and calls them often. Eli doesn’t really show his vulnerability easily, but he gets emotional when talking about his family.
He has many ahjumma fans, mainly because of his good looks. He’s also extremely polite and friendly. Because he was born in the U.S, he is the member with the worst Korean, and I find his language mistakes adorable.
Eli is definitely one of my favorite members of U-KISS. In fact, he’s one of my favorite kpop idols overall.
